100 colors no.53--"100 colors path"

March 25 - July 21, 2025
TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY
Tokyo (Japan)

"100 colors path", the no.53 work in the "100 colors" series, is an art installation made of countless lines in 100 colors. Each line is engraved with a year from 2025 to 100 years into the future, representing the passage of time in 100 colors. The gate-shaped artwork celebrates the grand opening of "TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY"—Tokyo’s new urban complex developed by East Japan Railway Company.

This visual timeline allows viewers to experience the flow of time across the next 100 years in a tangible, perceptible form. The infinite number of "paths" that could exist within the next 100 years are expressed through a layering of 100 colors. Lines overlapping in countless ways, a gradient of 100 colors, and a multitude of numbers—these elements intertwine to evoke the boundless possibilities that lie ahead in the century to come.

This installation is composed of 2,400 lines, arranged at equal intervals to create the spatial structure. Each line is colored in one of the 100 colors, and together, they form an ordered yet dynamic visual experience. As viewers move through the space or change their perspective, the numbers written on the lines appear and disappear. The overlapping of colors shifts with each step, creating a mesmerizing moiré effect. At the center of the installation lies a cut out path. By stepping inside, visitors can physically immerse themselves in the flow of 100 years of time and the vibrant energy of 100 colors.

In addition to the installation at Gateway Park, Emmanuelle created graphic artworks for the north and south ticket gates of Takanawa Gateway Station, as well as for the street flags. Also, an AR experience titled “100 colors city” allows visitors to immerse themselves in the world of 100 colors through their smartphones. During the exhibition period, a workshop titled “Let’s go find colors in the city!” was held, inviting participants to explore the theme of "color" in their everyday surroundings.

This installation embodies a heartfelt wish: that as people encounter various experiences and emotions along the path, they will continue to move forward with vibrancy and purpose toward the future.

TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY is an urban complex in Tokyo developed by East Japan Railway Company (JR East), centered around Takanawa Gateway Station in Tokyo's Minato Ward. Officially opened in March 2025.

100 colors no.53 "100 colors path"  is part of Emmanuelle’s "100 colors" installation series.
